Birthstone of August: Peridot
August is here and the peridot is the gemstone to have! The peridot is a stone that ranges in color from yellowish green to deep olive. While its exceptional color is mystifying; the once believed purpose is magical. Ancient Egyptians credited the peridot with the ability to heal and guard against evil. It was also thought to sweeten dreams and reveal hidden insights. It was not just the ancient Egyptians that saw the peridot as a useful tool. Historically, this gemstone was believed to bring happiness, attract love and foster friendship. Worn by anyone, the peridot would produce bliss and good fortune. Peridots are often found in the lava of volcanoes, and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The largest of peridots has been recorded as a 310 carat (62 g) specimen. It is held at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
